Astoria Closes in on National Main Street Honor
Astoria, Oregon, a prominent community on the north Oregon coast, has achieved national recognition as a semifinalist for the 2027 Great American Main Street Award. The designation comes from Main Street America, which selected the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association (ADHDA) among eight semifinalists from a pool of outstanding candidates across the United States. This distinction represents the organization's highest honor for urban commercial district revitalization rooted in historic preservation.
Selection Process and Main Street Approach™

This year's applications, submitted from various communities nationwide, were reviewed by a national jury comprised of experts in community development, economic development, and historic preservation. The jury selected eight semifinalists based on their demonstrated success in fostering vibrant, resilient downtowns and local economies.

The work itself is the reward, but it is reaffirming to know that our efforts do not go unnoticed.”
Under the framework of oregon main street—the statewide coordinating program focused on historic downtown preservation—Astoria’s main street revitalization efforts have served as a model. As one of Oregon’s longest-serving Main Street organizations, ADHDA demonstrates the power of local heritage as a foundation for economic revitalization and business growth.
National Significance and Impact
According to Main Street America, this year’s semifinalist programs have collectively contributed over $2.1 billion in local reinvestment. Their achievements include the opening of 1,271 net new businesses, creating 7,607 net new jobs, rehabilitating 2,411 historic buildings, and accumulating more than 252,000 volunteer hours toward downtown revitalization. Since the award’s inception in 1995, only 118 out of more than 2,000 Main Street programs have earned the Great American Main Street Award, making semifinalist status a major accomplishment in the movement for historic downtown preservation and community development.
Looking Ahead to 2027 Award Announcement
Winners of the 2027 Great American Main Street Award will be announced on May 3, 2027, during the opening plenary session of the Main Street Now Conference in Detroit. At that time, three semifinalist programs will be selected to receive this prestigious national main street award in recognition of their exceptional contributions to downtown revitalization and historic preservation.
With two consecutive semifinalist nods, Astoria, Oregon, stands as a proud example of the impact that dedicated main street revitalization can have on a community and the enduring value of celebrating local heritage and collaboration.
