Trump’s Diddy Pardon Comments Spark Online Debate

Donald Trump is once again stirring up speculation about whether he has any plans to get involved in the criminal case of Sean “Diddy” Combs. The former president recently told Newsmax’s Finnerty on Friday, August 1, that he would “look at the facts” if asked about the idea of him extending a presidential pardon to the Bad Boy Records founder.

In early July, Combs was found guilty of one federal charge, the lesser charge of transportation with intent to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted on more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. The seven-week trial included a laundry list of testimony and surprise witnesses. A high-profile moment during the trial included the appearance of singer Cassie Ventura, who spoke about her previous relationship with Combs and alleged abuse and trafficking. Combs has maintained that he is innocent of any crimes and has denied the accusations.

Trump was asked about the possible pardon for Combs. “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” Trump said. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”

Trump further said that he was “friendly” with Combs in the past, but that that relationship had changed. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump said. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Background on Trump’s Comments

This isn’t the first time that Trump has brought up the possibility of pardoning Combs. Back in May, Trump had a similar exchange with a Fox News reporter in the Oval Office. In that moment, he had made similar comments to the ones he just recently made, also vowing to look at the facts before deciding on the issue. He also made it clear that he would not be weighing in one way or the other if he believed that Combs was guilty or not.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said to Peter Doocy. “But I would look at it and determine whether or not it was something that I felt was, if he was, you know, totally innocent or not. I would say, if I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

A look at the facts from Combs’ trial has not stopped Trump from continuing to talk about the case and the idea of a pardon. Combs was sentenced in July following a high-profile case in which he was found guilty of one charge of transporting an individual with the intent of engaging in prostitution. Combs has been ordered to remain on home confinement during the appeals process. The formal sentencing date is October 3, but Combs could get as many as 20 years in prison if he is not pardoned before then.

Trump’s comments have only added to the interest in the case that is only getting started. Although he is no longer in the White House, Trump has been more than willing to weigh in on the issue. Trump is also only adding more to the public’s speculation that his previous relationship with Combs, whether good or bad, may factor into a decision on a pardon.
