Navigating Fame in a Viral World: Pedro Pascal’s Candid Take
In an industry of influencers and corporate gatekeeping, it’s easy to feel cynical when celebrities appear at a remove or practice public diplomacy with scripted statements. But the Hollywood media machine looks different now. The interview setups that used to allow for in-depth conversations with journalists have been replaced with influencer videos and bite-sized content across platforms. Public figures feel like they can’t just speak candidly anymore. Conversations become soundbites, and those soundbites can be weaponized.
But Pedro Pascal, the 50-year-old Chilean-American actor, has no interest in staying quiet. The actor has built a career over two decades on his decision to speak his mind, and while celebrity culture may be heavily curated, Pascal refuses to be performative or hold back on what he truly believes in. The result? Fans watching the star’s rise to international fame feel more like they’re seeing the real Pascal, not some marketing effort or brand reinforcement.
The actor, whose credits include The Mandalorian, Secret Identity, and his recent starring role in The Last of Us, will next be seen in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps as Dr. Reed Richards. Pascal is well aware of the draw of the superhero suit and studio press interviews, but when he’s not in action sequences or on location, he has continued to speak out on his interests in social justice and humanitarian causes. The actor’s Instagram account, which has 11 million followers, doesn’t just feature previews and movie posters, but Pascal wearing a shirt that reads “Protect The Dolls” in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, posts about food blockades in Gaza, and links to organizations like Doctors Without Borders and The Trevor Project.
Speaking with Sky News during a London press tour for The Fantastic Four, Pascal addressed the challenge and risk of speaking truth to power in a viral media world.
“I think it’s very easy to get scared, no matter what you sort of talk about,” he said.
His point is certainly fair. One sentence, cut from its intended context, can end up on TikTok or splintered into a headline within days, if not hours. “There are so many different ways that things can get kind of fractured and have a life of itself,” Pascal continued.
But Pascal is clear in the interview that he isn’t going to be stopped by fear.
“There’s one thing that you can say and no matter what your intention behind it, it is lost in all of these different headlines, I suppose—but I’ll never shut up.”
The last line lands hard at the end of a four-minute clip, and it cuts through some of the noise. Pascal’s desire to be honest and his commitment to his integrity are rare in an industry where reputations are built and destroyed at the speed of the internet. He knows the stakes, but he also knows he must speak.
Pedro Pascal Is More Than a Superhero
In the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Pascal portrays Reed Richards, a scientist and superhero with the weight of human responsibility as his team tries to protect the planet while he and Sue Storm get ready to welcome their first child. The metaphor isn’t lost here. Pascal understands that the eye of the public is watching, but he doesn’t just put on a suit and walk away. He has a strong moral compass.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is directed by WandaVision helmer Matt Shakman and is a new, standalone version of Marvel’s long-running comic book heroes. Pascal is joined by Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. But Pascal’s dedication to his principles may be his most alluring quality for fans.
Pedro Pascal wasn’t made overnight, in a viral TikTok clip or social media “street team.” Pascal has had a career with credits in meaningful, challenging roles that show his range. The slower, steady rise of his career is probably part of what allows him to stay so level and keep his priorities straight.
The world is full of celebrities who are staying quiet in order to avoid backlash. By refusing to keep quiet, Pascal is doing more than rejecting a celebrity standard. He’s showing us what it means to be human.
And it is perhaps that which makes Pedro Pascal “fantastic.”
