Apple TV+ released an official trailer for the third season of its high-budget, massively ambitious sci-fi series Foundation, a reimagining of Isaac Asimov’s classic science fiction franchise. The trailer drops viewers right into the chaos as a galaxy faces annihilation, one of Asimov’s greatest villains rises, and a new threat of galactic proportions looms. Season 3 of Foundation will premiere on July 11, 2025, with new episodes arriving weekly until September 12.
If the first two seasons are any indication, season 3 will continue the show’s freewheeling approach to the novels, sending its characters hurtling through the centuries in massive time jumps. Season 1 ended 138 years in the future, and Season 2 covered the Second Crisis, a pivotal moment in Asimov’s saga in which war between the Foundation and the Galactic Empire loomed. The Foundation, on the other hand, took a far more extreme approach to expansion, weaponizing religious fanaticism to increase its sphere of influence. A “secret colony” of thousands of people with powerful psionic abilities known as “Mentalics” was also introduced.
Season 3 makes an even bigger jump, landing 152 years after the events of the second season and placing the story within a period known as the Third Crisis in Asimov’s timeline. According to the official synopsis from Apple TV+, the Foundation “has become far more entrenched and powerful than its early leaders could have imagined” by this point. At the same time, “the once-unshakeable Cleonic Dynasty is beginning to rot from within, forced to ally itself with a rising Foundation to fend off an unimaginable enemy.” This enemy is none other than The Mule, a warlord with “the military strength to make entire civilizations tremble, as well as the ability to reshape minds and hearts.”
“You know, I’ve always had a problem with the Foundation,” the season’s villain, The Mule (Pilou Asbæk), tells a group of his followers in the trailer. “When the chips are down, the strong fall for the propaganda of the weak.” The trailer opens on Hari Seldon’s voice intoning a chilling message. “Centuries ago, when we predicted the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity,” he says. “But the coming darkness was always the turning point.” Gaal Dornick, who has been slowly amassing power in the show, follows with a stark warning: “We’re out of time.”
The Mule is not your typical villain. He has a knack for “reshaping minds and hearts” with unnerving efficiency, and his influence will have to be far-reaching to affect the entire galaxy. “I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love,” he boasts, in a calm, low voice. “It only takes a little nudge.” Explosions, battles, the collapse of entire cities: The trailer drops viewers right into the frenzied action, only to pull back for some more foreshadowing dialogue from Seldon.
Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann reprise their roles as Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, the three imperial clones. Jared Harris also returns as the protagonist, Hari Seldon, as do Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick and Laura Birn as the powerful, mysterious android Eto Demerzel.
Season 3 also features a slew of new cast additions. Alexander Siddig, who has a history with Foundation showrunner David S. Goyer in the live-action movie Gotham, will play Dr. Ebling Mis, a true believer of Hari Seldon’s work who is a self-taught psychohistorian in his own right. Troy Kotsur is set to play Preem Palver, a leader of an entire planet of psychics, and Cherry Jones will portray Foundation ambassador Quent. Brandon P. Bell is set to play Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen is Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern will reprise his role as Toran Mallow, and Tómas Lemarquis will play the flamboyant showboat Magnifico Giganticus. Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing and Leo Bill will play Song and Mayor Indbur, respectively.
Life, the Universe, and Psychohistory
Foundation has always had one major advantage on its source material: the fantastical idea of “psychohistory,” a made-up science that uses a blend of math and sociology to predict the broad strokes of human behavior. This season, that model itself is threatened by the Mule, whose powers throw logic and emotional reaction into chaos. The battle for the future of the galaxy may no longer be one waged with probabilities. It may be a fight for survival.
Visually, the show has been up to the task, offering sweeping space vistas, colorful, detailed designs for new civilizations, and high-octane action in all the right places. But the trailer has real emotional heft, an emphasis on the stakes as Asimov’s world truly seems to hang in the balance. Can the Empire and the Foundation truly join forces? Can psychohistory stand up against an enemy who is weaponizing love and hate in equal measure? Is there any possible future where the galaxy is not plunged into chaos?
Season 3 seems primed to take these questions to the next level, with the high stakes, nuanced characters, and widescreen world-building honed over the first two seasons. For fans of speculative fiction and big-budget television alike, there is a lot to get excited about. With new episodes arriving weekly, starting on July 11, that time will not be long.
