Strange New Worlds Season 3 Showcases Crew’s Grit

Paramount+ has released the official trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, over a year after it was first announced. Fans will have to wait until July 2025 to see the first episode of the next chapter for the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Strange New Worlds Season 3 trailer

Season 2 saw the Enterprise caught in the middle of a Gorn attack on a Federation colony world. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and a handful of crew members were captured along with other survivors from the planet’s surface. At the end of the season, Pike is forced to make a command decision to either carry out orders and evacuate or break Starfleet protocol and attempt a rescue mission. Naturally, Pike opts for the latter, and the third season will see the conclusion of this arc.

The full trailer for Season 3 of Strange New Worlds picks up just where last year’s finale left off, as seen in the preview released last October at New York City Comic-Con. The new trailer shows a brief action-packed space battle (a franchise hallmark) against the Gorn aggressors. The third season will also see the Enterprise finally end the conflict against these endless threats. However, this won’t be the only arc the crew faces going into Season 3, as the new trailer teases other new antagonists and dangers that will challenge the loyalty, bravery, and endurance of Pike and the Enterprise crew.

Strange New Worlds Season 3 will feature some familiar characters, but several new faces too. Cillian O’Sullivan joins the main cast to play Dr. Roger Korby, a character from Star Trek: The Original Series. In that series, he was portrayed by Michael Strong. In the timeline of Strange New Worlds, Korby was the fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) before he mysteriously vanished. A renowned archaeologist and medical archaeology expert, his unexpected return on the Enterprise is bound to cause some personal and professional complications for Chapel, especially considering that she is now involved with Spock (Ethan Peck).

The series will also see guest appearances from two comedic actors: Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. The new trailer continues teasing the wide range of genres this next season will focus on. The April teaser trailer itself suggested at least two episodes featuring starship action or space opera themes. Others will take on more of a historical or religious approach, while several will include themes of romance, comedy, and even mystery. According to Paramount+, the third season will have genre twists unlike anything fans have seen in the Star Trek franchise in the past.

Strange New Worlds Season 3 trailer

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be returning with its full main and recurring cast members for the third season. The addition of Cillian O’Sullivan is one of the most significant new cast members for the next season. O’Sullivan will play the role of Dr. Roger Korby, a character from Star Trek: The Original Series. In the original series, he was played by Michael Strong. In the Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is a well-respected archaeologist and a medical archaeology expert. He is also the missing fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). He was presumed missing or dead after a work mission. His unexpected return to the Enterprise is expected to cause some personal and professional issues with Chapel, who has moved on with Spock (Ethan Peck).

Guest starring for this upcoming season are Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both comedians. The April trailer leaned heavily into this genre diversity with at least one episode described as an action-oriented adventure. While another is a “side story,” the inclusion of these two guest actors hints that the season will have an arc or two, taking a more humorous approach. The new trailer underlines this by showing the Enterprise crew in a more personal and bonding state at several points. As well, it shows the handling of a delicate romance subplot for Chapel and Spock. Finally, there is even a scene showing several characters in the aftermath of a science experiment gone awry.

Fans also get a notable scene in the new trailer with James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) assuming command of the Enterprise, albeit for a short time. While his involvement is left a bit ambiguous, Kirk is shown being given orders and advice by Pike. The legendary captain will have a formative experience in the new season, to be sure, and Pike states that very much in the scene.

“The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”

This line is said with a straightforwardness and confidence that makes sense only from Pike. He’s faced decisions and choices just like these for as long as he’s served Starfleet. As the season will be called by Kirk at least twice (the full command, for an extended time, is far more unlikely), it will be interesting to see how this future captain’s Starfleet leadership is shaped.

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end on a funnier note, showing a bit of banter and a rare comedic moment with Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan. In the best-timed and recognized exchange in the trailer, Spock is demonstrating the Vulcan high five, first doing it correctly, then doing the universally known “too slow” move with his Vulcan counterpart. The latter character exclaims, “Why would you do that?” Spock’s deadpan reply is “Because you are too slow.” It’s a small yet accurate bit of characterization for Spock that makes sense for both the character and series in general.
