Oregon Coast Roadwork Underway and Planned
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has initiated new and upcoming roadwork projects along the Oregon coast, with opportunities for public input on plans affecting Highway 6 and multiple areas of U.S. 101. These projects aim to enhance roadway safety, improve traffic flow, and address recurring issues such as flooding and pedestrian access.
Highway 6 Roundabout Construction Near Banks
ODOT, working in coordination with the City of Banks and Washington County, is preparing to open a new roundabout at the intersection of OR 6 (Highway 6) and NW Aerts Road. The project is designed to improve safety and accommodate future traffic volumes.
Construction on the roundabout is set to commence in early November. During this transition period, the south side of NW Aerts Road will be temporarily closed at the roundabout to allow crews to remove the temporary bypass road and complete the permanent roadway connection. Motorists are advised to exercise caution in the work zone, follow posted signs, and be aware of workers present on site.
Additional construction zones and ongoing safety improvement projects will continue along the OR 6 corridor between Banks and the Oregon coast. Project updates and further details are available on the ODOT project webpages.
Seeking Input on US 101 Improvements at Nehalem and Wheeler
ODOT is in the planning stages for two major safety projects along U.S. 101 in Nehalem and Wheeler. The agency is seeking community input to help identify future improvements intended to make travel safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users.
Proposed improvements for these areas include marked crossings, pedestrian-activated signals, curb-ramp upgrades, new bicycle facilities, and intersection safety enhancements. The study will also consider better access to local businesses, housing, transit stops, parks, and community services.
Residents and the public are encouraged to participate by completing an online survey before November 22. In-person opportunities to speak with project representatives are scheduled for November 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with locations at the corner of U.S. 101 and Seventh Street in Nehalem, and at 500 Nehalem Blvd. in Wheeler.
Seaside Flooding Solutions Under Discussion
Another critical study underway focuses on addressing seasonal flooding along a three-mile stretch of U.S. 101 near Seaside. This section of highway is an essential corridor for residents, freight, and tourists, but seasonal flooding poses challenges for emergency response and disrupts travel and local business activity.
To explore solutions, ODOT plans to form both a Technical Advisory Committee and a Public Advisory Committee. The committees will include local first responders, residents, business owners, representatives from the North Coast Land Conservancy, and elected officials from Clatsop County and the City of Seaside.
A public open house will take place on November 10 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Seaside Public Library (1131 Broadway Street, Seaside). Community members are invited to learn more about potential alternatives and discuss the ongoing study. Accessible parking will be available at the front of the library.
