Walktober Celebrates Its Fourth Year in Lane County
The popular community walking initiative Walktober returns for its fourth year, offering more than 50 free, themed, guided walks throughout Lane County during the month of October. Residents of Eugene and Springfield are encouraged to join these local events to connect with others, discover new places, and enjoy the health benefits of walking.
Diverse Themed Walks for All Interests
Walktober's schedule includes a variety of activities and interests. Highlights for the fourth week of October include the Eugene Masonic Cemetery Arboretum Tour at 5 p.m. on October 22, where participants can learn about the history of the local cemetery. For nature lovers, a birding expert leads the Island Park bird walk at 9 a.m. on October 24, offering an opportunity to spot local birds and learn about their habitats. Later that day, those interested in sustainable shopping can take part in the Thrift Shop Hop at noon, a guided exploration of downtown thrift stores led by a local expert.
Building Community Through Walking
Delaney Thompson, the Walktober coordinator, emphasizes that the month-long series is about more than just walking. "It’s mainly to get folks out into the community, walking, meeting new people, trying new things, maybe going into new businesses," Thompson explains. "And giving walking a try if it’s not something that they usually do." The event aims to foster community engagement and encourage residents to explore their cities in fresh ways.
Prizes and Participation
In addition to the benefits of physical activity and social connection, Walktober participants have the chance to win prizes. Every themed walk is free and open to people of all ages and abilities, making it accessible to the wider community. Newcomers and experienced walkers alike are invited to sample the diverse offerings and perhaps develop a renewed appreciation for their neighborhoods.

Encouraging Community Walking Year-Round
As Walktober 2026 continues, its organizers hope to inspire ongoing community walking beyond the themed events of October. By highlighting local landmarks, businesses, and natural spaces, Walktober serves as an invitation to explore and connect all year long.
