Boat Capsizes at the Mouth of Siletz Bay
A tragic incident unfolded on the central Oregon coast on Friday, October 16, when a boat capsized at the mouth of Siletz Bay near Lincoln City. Emergency crews responded quickly to the accident, which resulted in the death of one individual and the rescue of six others from the cold waters.
Details of the Emergency Response
According to a press release from the North Lincoln Fire & Rescue (NLFR), their agency, along with the Depoe Bay Fire District (DBFD), responded to reports of a boat capsizing with multiple people in the water shortly after 1 p.m. The swift emergency response was aided by several agencies, including Pacific West Ambulance, the Lincoln City Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Oregon State Police.
Rescue Operations on Both Sides of Siletz Bay
Bystanders informed crews upon arrival that one person had escaped the water on the north side of the bay, within NLFR's area, while five others were out on the south side, covered by DBFD. Rescue teams established incident command near SW 51st Street and coordinated rescue operations across both sides of Siletz Bay.
Initial reports suggested the possibility of a seventh person missing, prompting North Lincoln Fire & Rescue to deploy a water-rescue personal watercraft. However, all individuals were later accounted for, and the concern was resolved.
Medical Evaluation and Fatality
Of the people involved, four were evaluated and released at the scene. One person required additional care and was transported by Pacific West Ambulance to a local hospital; their condition had not been released at the time of the report. Tragically, another individual was found deceased on the beach, marking the event as a fatal boating accident.
Agencies Involved and Public Response
A total of eight apparatus and 18 personnel actively participated in the rescue. Assistance from multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard and Oregon State Police, highlighted the collaborative nature of the water rescue. North Lincoln and Depoe Bay Fire Districts publicly thanked the community for their assistance and extended condolences to the families affected by the accident.
Boating Safety and Area Conditions
The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of water conditions near the mouth of Siletz Bay, even in generally calm areas. Boaters are urged to always check wave conditions in addition to tides, particularly when navigating near a bay opening and the ocean. Maintaining attention to boating safety protocols can be critical in avoiding future tragedies along the Oregon coast.
Further Information
The Oregon State Police are expected to provide additional details as the investigation continues.
